Oil pumps and lubrication

The task of lubrication is entrusted to certain organs that ensure not only lubrication but also cooling of parts subjected to high thermal stress (pistons, cylinders, bearings and connecting rods).

The oil sump is the component of the engine designated for containing the lubricator oil and the oil sucker that sends it into circulation. Usually it seals the lower part of the crankcase. It is fastened to the crankcase with screw, a gasket is placed in between, or in certain cases, sealing paste, to avoid leaks.

The oil sump can be produced with different materials:

  • Sheet metal
  • Plastic
  • Cast iron (more rarely)

The oil sump is one of the parts that composes Mec-Diesel longblocks. Depending on the engine type, the oil sump can change shape and material. For example, Daily and Ducato have two different sumps, because the engines, although having the same derivation, are arranged in different positions and consequently, the sump changes.

The oil pump is the component of the engine that has the task to pump the lubricator contained in the oil sump, into the circulation, towards the parts that need it. The pump takes the oil from the lower part of the sump through a nozzle and it is enabled by the gears on the end of the crankshaft.
